The Ruães run-of–river plant is located on the Cávado River, a major river near the city of Braga in Northern Portugal. The facility has been operating for several decades and was originally designed as a river plant. The plant has modernized in 2002 and an automatic control has been installed during 2003. The plant has an installed capacity of 1.8 MW and an expected annual production of 7.3 GWh (average is 9.5GWh). Head is 2.7 nm. The facility is equipped with two Kaplan turbines The plant was just recently granted a new 33 year concession that expires in 2036
